The Wonderful World of Cricket!

I mentioned Cricket in my last post, so i have decided to make you guys who have no idea what it is aware of exactly what this great sport entails. The rules, the history and what it means to English people will be covered in this post and will hopeful answer the questions, i know you have all been eager to hear. Cricket started way back in the 16th century, with international matches played since 1844, During this time, the game developed from its origins in England into a game which is now played professionally in most of the commonwealth of nations. Just like soccer, (football) England is the home of cricket and is widely popular throughout the country. Cricket is a team sport for two teams of eleven players each. A formal game of cricket can last anything from an afternoon to several days. Although the game play and rules are very different, the basic concept of cricket is similar to that of baseball. Teams bat in successive innings and attempt to score runs, while the opposing team fields and attempts to bring an end to the batting team's innings. After each team has batted an equal number of innings (either one or two, depending on conditions chosen before the game), the team with the most runs wins.
Equipment plays a big role in the game of cricket and here is a run through of what is needed to play.

Cricket ball
- Hard, cork and string ball, covered with leather. A bit like a baseball (in size and hardness), but the leather covering is thicker and joined onc two sides, the stitching is raised slightly. The ball weighs between 156 and 163 grams (5.5 to 5.75 ounces). Traditionally the ball is dyed red, with the stitching left white. Nowadays white balls are also used, for visibility in games played at night under flood lighting. Cricket Bat- The bat is made of willow, flat on one side, humped on the other for strength, attached to a sturdy cane handle. It is a similar size to a baseball bat.Wickets- There are two . Stumps- Three wooden posts, 32 inches high and barely wide. They have have spikes at the bottom so they can be hammered into the ground in an evenly spaced row. This means they are just close enough together that a cricket ball cannot pass between them. Protective Gear- Pads, gloves, helmet, etc for batsmen to wear to prevent injury when struck by the ball. Shoes- Trainers usually with spiked soles for grip on the grass, a bit like golf shoes. Clothing- For games played with a red ball, the clothing must be white or cream. With a white ball, players usually wear uniforms in solid team colours. My team, Yorkshire play there matches with a white ball in blue. Cricket still remains a major world sport in terms of participants, spectators and media interest. The ICC (international cricket corporation) has expanded its Development Program with the goal of producing more national teams capable of competing at an international level. The United States are one of the nations targeted expand the game of cricket.

Dutch defeat Domincan in the tournaments first upset!

For those of you who voted on my latest poll for the Dominican Republic to win the Baseball classic there has been a turn for the worst as one of the heavy favorites to win the competition lost to a rookie Netherlands team in the searing heat in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This was a major upset as the Dutch man's defense held on for a 3 to 2 win. The Dominican will now play for survival in the competition against Pannama, who also lots its opening game. They wil battle it out on Sunday March 8th at 4:30 p.m. ET at Hiram Bithorn Stadiumin San Juan. The Netherlands will play Puerta Rico on the 9th March for the chance to advance to the later stages of the competition.

David Beckham latest....

Many of you guys wanted me to keep you updated on the David Beckham, A.C Milan story so the latest news coming out now is that A.C Milan and the L.A Galaxy have agreed a deal for David Beckham which will see the midfielder in Milan untill the summer before returning to the Galaxy for the remainder of the MLS season. All parties are happy with this deal and Beckham said on www.skysports.com website that he is "really grateful to the LA Galaxy and AC Milan for making this dream deal happen". In an ideal world, Beckham will be able to lift the champions leauge trophy in May and then return to L.A and get them into the playoffs for a shot at the MLS tittle.

The World Baseball Classic-Coming Soon!

The 2009 world baseball classic is fast approaching and it is something that will excite the worlds baseball fans. The tournament will take place in 7 different venues all over the world, including Tokyo and Mexico city. The best players in the MLB and other major league baseball teams around the globe will be brought together to compete for the world crown. English basball has never been a part of the culture and you would find it a tough task to try and get the majority of Brits into it. Cricket is fairly similar to baseball in that they hit a ball and run but the concept is slightly different. A batter is still out if he/she gets caught but differnt points systems are set up in both sports. I personally think cricket and baseball are both fairly boring and i could not sit happily and enjoy either. Cricket matches can last 5 days so you can imagine the intensity of a viewer to sit and engage for a whole 5 days. I am looking forward to seeing the format of the Basball classic and will definatly be watching out for the results and hoping the U.S.A can prosper!

A Rod and drugs in baseball.

The sport of baseball is facing its toughest test in recent history. The admission by Alex rodriguez of him taking drugs from the 2001-2003 Major League baseball season has struck sports fans across America. The emotions were running high as you can see on the video i posted with A rod, as fans like to call him came out about this awful wrong doing. It is not just him being hounded in the press. Barry bonds another baseball player has been subject to a number of court hearings to discus his dealings with performance enhancing drugs.
From my experinces as a young boy growing up in England, i had never heard of athletes taking drugs but since i have moved to the states i have recognised a number of athletes that are taking performance enhances and i cannot think why this is? Obviously it makes them a better player but why not work yiour bum off in the gym and on the training field and get better that way. It frustrates me to look at these amazing athletes have a doubt at the back of my mind where i fear they may be on drugs. Thoughts please...

Will Becks stay or go?!

David Beckham has been at the forefront of much speculation this over the past coming weeks over his alleged move to European giants A.C Milan of Italy's Seria A. Beckham has expressed his desire to make his loan move to San Siro (Milans Stadium) permanent in order to reinforce his chances of playing at the 2010 World Cup.Milan are understood to have had an initial bid in the region of £6million rejected by Galaxy, who are thought to want around £8m for the midfielder, but the Serie A club's vice-president Adriano Galliani claimed earlier on Thursday that there had been substantial progress in this transfer.
After you here of Baseball players over in the states getting money deals well in the excess of 20 million dollors a year, 8 million for David Beckham seems miniscule. It shows that the "big three" sports in America have substantial econiomic differences and can offer in my opinion ridiculous amounts of money to players and staff.
What are your opinions on this?
